Ten little toy cars, all in a row,
ready to be fueled by a young child’s imagination.
All in perfect alignment at the edge of the table.
The flat racecourse of plywood, stretching for five feet.
The small hands push them all together into position,
ready, set, go!
The red car wins, the blue car a close second,
the green one drifts to a third, then the black one,
followed by the white one and the purple.
Eight cars crossed the coveted finish line.
The orange one stopped a bit away from the finish line.
All were picked up at the announcement for dinner,
and given their rightful place in the cupboard.
The small yellow car upturned on the floor,
went unnoticed, unseen.
Until mom saw it and sighed and kept it back in the cupboard
